Privacy Policy for the FIU Website

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) is committed to maintaining the privacy of your personal information. The information practice for our website is set forth below. The FIU does not collect, store or use information obtained through this website, except as described in this policy.

Information we Collect and Store When a Visitor Visits the Website

The FIU may automatically collect and store information about the Internet connection when a visitor visits this website. This information includes the following:

  • the date and time the website was accessed

  • the pages visited

  • if you linked to the FIU website from another website, the address of that website

  • the type of browser used to access our site (e.g. Internet Explorer 8.0)

  • the IP (Internet Protocol) address. An IP address is a number that is assigned to your computer whenever you surf the Internet

  • the action that you tried to perform (for example, download a document) and whether or not that attempt was successful.

The FIU website does not use "cookies." A cookie is an entry placed in a file on the hard drive of your computer, usually without your knowledge, by a website that allows it to monitor your use of the website.

Information we Collect and Store When a Visitor Gives Feedback

If a visitor chooses to give us feedback on the website via electronic mail (or if a visitor requests for additional information from the FIU), the visitor will be asked for personal information such as name, address and profession. When a visitor sends information to the FIU, it will be considered that consent has been given for the FIU to use the information collected from the message consistent with this policy.

When a visitor provides personal information, the FIU will maintain the information to process the inquiry. FIU employees will see the information in the course of their official duties. In limited circumstances, pursuant to a court order, we may be required by law to disclose the information you submit.

How we Use the Information

The FIU uses the information (i.e. the information that is collected automatically and the additional information that you may provide) to measure the volume of requests for specific website pages, to improve the website, and to be responsive to user needs and inquiries. The FIU may use the IP address information to gauge unusually heavy traffic from a single address.

Although questions, comments, and other communications that we receive are generally not retained as permanent records, please note that it is possible that any mail--electronic or paper--that we receive could become part of the permanent record of the FIU, if the mail is part of materials that are scheduled for permanent retention.

Security of the Website

For the security of the FIU website and to ensure that the site remains available to all users, FIU employs software programs to monitor network traffic to identify unauthorised attempts to upload or change information, or otherwise cause damage.
